Industrial Application Requirements and System Evaluation

The objectives of WP1 may be summarised as follows:

• Definition of end-user requirements
• Definition of requirements concerning the radio channel
• Definition of reference scenarios
• Assessment of existing and emerging wireless technologies and modulation techniques
• Radio channel investigation
• Selection of the most appropriate radio platform
• Assessment and evaluation of existing data communication systems (real-time, mobility management support, industrial multi-media)

The objectives will be met by analysing user requirements and channel/ mobility characterisation in target industrial environments and by investigating existing and upcoming radio technologies. Special attention will be paid to real-time and reliability aspects.

After evaluating the communication requirements of standard fieldbus systems and after assessments of existing mobility protocols and existing multi-media functionality a radio technology will be selected and a system architecture will be defined.
