Doctoral Programs
PhD students of the CISTER Research Unit are usually enrolled within a specialized stream in Embedded and Real-Time Systems (ERTS) in Doctoral Programs of the School of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP - Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto), which will also award the PhD on successful completion of the studies. The stream takes advantage of the synergy between the Electrical and Computer Engineering as well as Informatics Engineering Departments at FEUP and the CISTER research unit in the domain of Embedded and Real-Time systems.
This program requires classes during the first year of studies.
The stream courses are:
· Real-Time Embedded Systems (mandatory)
· Parallel and Distributed Embedded Systems (mandatory)
· Ubiquitous Embedded Systems (elective)
· Reliable and concurrent software (elective)
· Hardware/Software System Development (elective)
Please refer to the program website for more details:

Alternative enrolment is possible in the Carnegie Mellon Portugal program. In this program, students can obtain a double degree from the Carnegie Mellon University in the USA and a university in Portugal (University of Porto among others). Participation in the program implies time spent at both Universities. See the Carnergie Mellon Portugal program website for requirements and details:

Research work in these areas span from quality-of-service in WSNs, link quality estimation, scalable data processing to scheduling algorithms, analysis methods, single and multiprocessor operating systems work, component-based real-time systems, hierarchical scheduling, power management, software concurrency in languages, and real-time middleware. Individual topics can be discussed with potential supervisors after an initial assessment of the candidates. Please see the respective webpages mentioned above for details on possible research areas.
Research studies in CISTER are supervised by key internationally renowned researchers:
- Eduardo Tovar
- Mário Alves
- Shashi Prabh
- Björn Andersson
- Arvind Easwaran
- Stefan M. Petters
- Luís Miguel Pinho
Researching with CISTER is an opportunity to connect in national and international networks of researchers and companies, in an excellent research environment with researchers of different nationalities.
Grants
Research grants are available, for up to four years contract. Salary will be up to 14.000,00€ (after taxes) per year. Depending on CV and extra responsibilities, salary may be higher than standard FCT PhD grants.
Requirements
The candidates should have a Bachelor, Licenciate, or MSc degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or related fields. GRE and TOEFL are welcome but not mandatory. Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Candidates holding a Bachelor/Licenciate degree with a GPA (Grade Point Average) greater or equal to 75% are preferred.
If you are interested, please send your CV and a research statement, as soon as possible, to the e-mail JOBS@cister-isep.info. Candidates with relevant CVs will be interviewed.
