Towards Reliable Real-Time Data Transmission in Mobile Intelligent Transportation Systems
6, Feb, 2018 11:30-12:30 (1 hour)
CISTER, Porto, Portugal

ABSTRACT:
Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) gather information such as location, speed and time spent at each stop from their fleet vehicles and send them through a wireless connection (e.g., 3G link) to a central unit, responsible for controlling the activities of the vehicles, to improve on their safety and quality of service. As the network signal strength fluctuates with the move of each vehicle, it is not uncommon to have locations where all the collected information cannot be successfully transmitted.
In such circumstances, mechanisms must be implemented to select which information the network can afford to send. Assuming that the data have been labeled and classified beforehand according to their criticality, we will present and discuss the limitations of a methodology to derive the exact minimum network speed to successfully send each (set of) data, defining a set of speed thresholds for each level of criticality.
