Call for Papers ======================================================= 1st Intl WORKSHOP ON REAL-TIME LANS IN THE INTERNET AGE ======================================================= Technical University of Vienna, Austria June 18, 2002 http://www.hurray.isep.ipp.pt/rtlia2002/ in conjunction with the 14th Euromicro Intl Conference on Real-Time Systems Technical University of Vienna, Austria June 19-21, 2002 http://www.idt.mdh.se/ecrts02/ The Euromicro Technical Committee organizes a number of satellite events attached to its 14th International Real-Time Systems Conference. In the recent past, works addressing LANs for RT distributed computer- controlled applications could more or less start like this: "... despite its popularity, low-price, maturity and stability, Ethernet has a serious drawback concerning the support of real-time distributed applications, since it is difficult to guarantee predictable delays in delivering messages to network nodes ...". It is not like this anymore. Advances in switched-Ethernet are just one example of technology that is re-shaping the way RT distributed systems are engineered. In fact, advances in networking and information technologies are transforming real-time concerns into a mainstream activity spanning over almost every computer system. It is now recognised that future computer systems will be intimately tied to real-time computing and to communication technologies. For this vision to succeed, complex heterogeneous networks (including mobile/fixed and wireless/wired) need to function in a predictable, flawless and interoperable way. If we add on top of these arguments the thought that in a near future, all networks may be operating with some equivalent of IP technology, we may come to a point in the time where, theoretically, LANs, PANs (Personal Area Networks) and WANs may likely to converge... The goal of this workshop is to bring together people from industry and academia that are interested in all aspects of using commodity LAN technologies to support real-time and dependable applications in the Internet Era. The workshop will provide a relaxed forum to present and discuss new ideas, new research directions and to review current trends in this area. The workshop will be based on short presentations that should encourage discussion by the attendees. We encourage the prospective authors to address the real-time, QoS and dependability issues of the following topics: - LAN Technologies (Ethernet, Fieldbus, Myrinet, etc.) - Interoperability between LANs and PANs and between LANs and WANs - Interoperability between Hybrid Wired/Wireless Networks - Communication Technologies for e-Activities - Support of IP-based Applications - Networking of Embedded Computing Systems - Evaluation and case studies - Tools - Industry experience reports Statements which are innovative, controversial or that present new approaches are specially sought. SUBMISSION OF PAPERS: People who would like to participate in this event are asked to submit a pdf or postcript version of a 2 page extended abstract to the workshop chairman (emt@dei.isep.ipp.pt). The papers will be reviewed by an internal committee. Upon acceptance, a final paper of maximum 4 pages should be then be prepared and submitted. All papers will be made available to all participants a week before the workshop so that contributions can be examined prior to the workshop. The workshop sessions will involve 5-10 minute presentations followed by a 20-25 minute discussion. Authors will be asked to produce a final version of their paper that includes the issues covered in the discussions by 20 July, 2002. The final papers will be published by the Polytechnic Institute of Porto. To foster the workshop character the number of participants will be limited to 30. There will be a small charge for workshop registration. The workshop will be held at the Technical University of Vienna in the 18th June 2002. See the Euromicro Conference on Real-Time Systems website for information on the venue, hotel reservations and Vienna.
