F-LQE: A Fuzzy Link Quality Estimator for Wireless Sensor Networks
Ref: HURRAY-TR-091201 Publication Date: 17 to 19, Feb, 2010Abstract:
We consider the problem of link quality estimation in wireless sensor networks. Existing link quality estimators (e.g. PRR, ETX, Four-bit, and LQI ) are only able to assess a single link property, thus providing a partial view on the link quality. It is therefore important, yet challenging, to design link quality estimators that perform holistic link characterization by considering several properties. In this paper, we propose a novel link quality estimator that estimates link quality on the basis of four link quality properties namely, packet delivery, asymmetry, stability, and channel quality. Each of these properties is defined in linguistic terms, the natural language of Fuzzy Logic. The overall quality of the link is specified as a fuzzy rule whose evaluation returns the membership of the link in the fuzzy subset of good links. Values of the membership function are smoothed using EWMA filter to provide a stable link quality estimator, that we call F-LQE (Fuzzy-Link Quality Estimator). We show through extensive experimental measurements that F-LQE outperforms existing link quality estimators.
