PhD Student Positions

The CISTER/IPP-HURRAY Research Unit,
in co-operation with Instituto Superior Técnico (IST)
announces PhD-student grants for a
DUAL PhD DEGREE IN ELECTRICAL AND COMPUTER ENGINEERING
under the CMU-PORTUGAL Program

This PhD is to be offered by the Departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Carnegie Mellon University (CMU, USA) and at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST/UTL, Portugal), under the CMU-Portugal program. This programme is a partnership between the CMU and the Portuguese Government, aiming at creating top level and internationally recognized education and research programs in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT).

The CISTER/IPP-HURRAY Research Unit (www.cister.isep.ipp.pt) focuses its activity in the analysis, design and implementation of real-time and embedded computing systems and is one of the leading European research groups in the area. In 2004, the Unit was the only out of 28 nation-wide units in the area of 'Electrical and Computer Engineering' to be granted the classification of ‘Excellent’ from an international jury (FCT - Portuguese Science Foundation).

The CISTER/IPP-HURRAY research unit has been contributing with seminal research works in a number of subjects, such as real-time communication networks and protocols, wireless sensor networks (WSN), real-time programming paradigms and operating systems, distributed embedded real-time systems; cooperative computing and QoS-aware applications, scheduling and schedulability analysis (including multiprocessor systems) and cyber-physical systems (CPS). This is a sufficiently broad spectrum of strategic research topics, which we will keep pursuing in the coming years.

This collaborative scientific program includes a dual doctoral program in the area of Electrical and Computer Engineering. The main focus of this doctoral program is on Sensing Technologies and Networks for Risk Minimization Systems, with an additional emphasis on their application to Cyber-Physical Systems such as critical infrastructures. This wide area of research includes communication infrastructures (e.g., wireless sensor and ad-hoc networks), hardware/software platforms (embedded real-time and distributed computing systems), sensing and decision systems (signal/video processing, surveillance, robotics and distributed decision systems) and risk assessment. Students will be supervised by two faculty advisors, one from Carnegie Mellon and the other from CISTER/IPP-HURRAY. The dual doctoral program is structured so that students spend part of their time at CMU and part of their time in Portugal.

Potential candidates should send applications to , and include the following:

  • CV (including publication list);
  • detailed list of courses and grading;
  • GRE and TOEFL scores (if it applies).

Candidates that show enough potential will then be coached for submitting their application to CMU and to the Portuguese Science Foundation. Candidates should hold a Bachelor, Licentiate or MSc degree in Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering or related fields. GRE and TOEFL are required.
